We the People
The first line of the Declaration of Independence established a new form of government; one ran by the people. Since 1776, the idea of “the people” has expanded to include women, African Americans, and Native Americans. Conversations about who “the people” are, and how this has changed over time provides opportunities to consider the rights and responsibilities of the people.
